Barbastro, Somontano’s capital, placed by the banks of the river Vero, is a relatively small town, away from the crows and traffic of the big cities, but with a wide range of services. It has preserved its traditions and heritage without rejecting the modernity.
The city offers to visitors an attractive route for its History and characters and shows an important old town where the highlights are the Cathedral (16th century, declared a Historical-Artistic monument), the Market and Constitution squares, Argensola’s Palace and the UNED venue.
Barbastro is the starting point to visit the regions of Somontano, Sobrarbe and Ribagorza.
The region of Somontano is situated in the central zone of the province of Huesca, between the outer peaks of the Pyrenees and the vast plains that border the region of Monegros. It enjoys a strategic location on a route that joins Aragon, Cataluña, Navarra and the Basque Country.
Somontano is a land blessed with the perfect conditions for the cultivation of vineyards. Barbastro is the venue of the Council of Somontano Designation of Origin, located in San Julian complex, from where it is possible to initiate a tour around the main wineries whose prestige goes beyond our borders.
Just a few kilometres away from the city you can enjoy a variety of landscapes, the possibility of practising adventure sports in Natural Park of Sierra y Cañones de Guara, Cave Art in the Cultural Park of Vero river, the medieval villages, as Alquézar, its traditional fairs and festivals or to taste Somontano wines and cuisine.
Sobrarbe is a region of contrasts and a great diversity, from the uppermost summit in the Pyrenees down to the lowest areas in the Old Sobrarbe. The stunning beauty of this region comes from its natural landscapes shown in its purest form. More than a half of its territory is officially protected as some kind of nature reserve, including Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park, Posets-Maladeta National Park, Sierra y Cañones de Guara Nature Reserve and also some glaciers in the Pyrenees declared Natural Monuments, comprising thousands of acres protected by the Natura Network 2000. It has a natural and cultural heritage as rich as valuable.
Ribargorza, at the northeastern limit of the province of Huesca, is also the biggest region of all.
This region is one of the historical counties which formed the Aragon Kingdom. Its architecture, mostly Romanesque, reflects the rich History of the ancient County. Their houses and its traditional architecture are the most characteristic expression of the spirit of its inhabitants, who have preserved a rich wealth of traditions and a great linguistic diversity. We found in it beautiful valleys, natural lakes, mountains and the highest peaks of the Pyrenean Axis as Aneto or Posets.
